Phone SMS

Receiving text messages and being approved to send them are separate setup steps.

Set Up Messaging​

  1. Select a number and enable SMS.
  2. Configure Messaging routing rules. Voice has its own list; SMS and WhatsApp share the Messaging list.
  3. For US outbound messages, complete A2P registration for local numbers or toll-free verification for toll-free numbers. Check outbound registration status before sending.
  4. Review SMS consent and opt-out handling, including the enrollment site and the messages Members receive.
  5. Test an incoming message and an approved outgoing message, then review the resulting Chat.

Detailed Instructions​

  • Phone Voice — separate Voice rules on the same line.
  • WhatsApp — separate approval and template requirements.

For Developers​

Use the Phone Numbers API for line settings and the Chats API for messaging operations. Carrier approval and Member consent still apply when sending programmatically.
